On Friday, a government medical practitioner, Dr J A Jayalal, from Kanyakumari district of Tamil Nadu, was elected national president of the Indian Medical Association (IMA), which is a professional body of doctors having approximately four lakh doctors as their members.
Dr Jayalal, is a professor of surgery in Tirunelveli Medical College. He will take the charge from the incumbent president Dr Rajan Sharma from 27th December.
Jayalal said the IMA would try hard to re-establish the transparency and sanctity of modern medicine without mixing with other traditional streams of medicine. He expressed the challenges that are ahead for doctors in the new education policy and the National Medical Commission. The IMA would also convince the Centre for the Central Healthcare Professionals Protection Act to avoid the violence against doctors.
He further said that they have lost 610 doctors to COVID-19 throughout the country and 67 doctors in the state. It is their genuine demand to the government to recognize them as martyrs of COVID-19.
